Statement by the Leader of the Shia Community in Pakistan, Ayatollah Syed Sajid Ali Naqvi, on Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day

Leader of the Shia Community in Pakistan said that 79 years have passed since Pakistan gained independence. Despite the passage of eight decades, the people are still neither prosperous nor have all the country’s challenges been fully overcome. Justice remains inaccessible, the law and order situation is unsatisfactory, 25 million children remain deprived of education, while hundreds of thousands of highly educated young people are unemployed. A large portion of the population has fallen below the poverty line, the lower-middle class has virtually disappeared, while the agriculture and labor sectors, as well as ordinary citizens, continue to suffer from neglect.

He said that we are celebrating the 79th Independence Day under such circumstances and must reflect on which matters and necessary measures have been overlooked. He emphasized that hollow slogans and displays can no longer influence or satisfy the common people, because this is no longer the time for promises but for practical action.

He further stressed that just as every possible effort was made to defend the homeland and Pakistan was transformed into a nuclear power, the same spirit must now be demonstrated in strengthening the country internally, economically, and socially. Until the spirit of the Pakistan Movement is revived and the national interest is prioritized in every matter, the fruits of freedom will neither reach the people nor will the country be able to progress.

He added that the state must equip the younger generation with the scientific, educational, technical, cultural, and developmental knowledge and skills required in the modern era, in order to enable them to face international challenges. He stated that genuine development in the country will not be possible until all these matters are addressed and implemented seriously.

On this occasion, he called upon the people to ensure the proper fulfillment of their responsibilities within their respective spheres of authority. He urged them to play their role in achieving national consensus and unity by promoting Muslim unity, sectarian and religious harmony, and brotherhood throughout the country.
